L/S of a village harbour. M/S of a man dressed in traditional costume walking along side of the harbour, passing the old boats. "...on the shores of what was once Holland's famous Zuider Zee, near Amsterdam, is one of the most colourful little villages in all the Netherlands - Volendam." - tells the voiceover.



M/S of two women wearing traditional costumes. They walk along an old boat. C/U shot of the face of an elderly man wearing traditional hat, smoking pipe. Cut to a young man on the deck of a boat repairing a fishing net.



It looks as if in Volendam the time has stopped centuries ago. Voiceover informs that the inhabitants of this village have not changed their lifestyles for centuries. And the images are there to confirm his claim: traditional costumes, hats, clogs, old boats, old houses. It is the ideal setting for a period play and, naturally, great tourist attraction.



Leaving Volendam should mean going back to the present time - but it depends what side one choses. C/U shot of a young couple (wearing modern clothes - tourists) on the boat. Man points at something, woman looks. L/S (eye-match) of a very colourful island. "Less then a mile off shore is the island of Marken" - one more place where history lives on as present. Houses and boats on this little island look the same as they did centuries ago - and people too!



C/U shot of the faces of a woman and a little girl. They are wearing traditional costumes, much more colourful then those of the people from Volendam. M/S of the people wearing traditional costumes and clogs. M/S of several children wearing traditional costumes. Succession of shots showing the untouched architecture of the past times. Lovely - apart from on a Saturday night.
