The Patient Educators Update is brought to you by MMDS, the Video on Demand Patient Education Solution for hospitals...http://synergybroadcast.com/solutions....
Please watch as Fran London MS, RN and author of No Time to Teach (http://notimetoteach.com) guides us through helping patients recognize problems.
Teaching priorities include informed consent, self-care, how to recognize problems; how to respond, and answering questions. Today we talk about how to teach patients to recognize problems and how to respond.
One of the reasons for high readmissions is inadequate patient education and discharge preparation, and that's caused by many nurses thinking they have no time to teach because they have so much to do; which is caused by the administration not making patient education a priority, and that is created because administration does not see the value in patient education because it's difficult to measure outcomes and it has no revenue directly associated with it.
It's true that you can't make money directly from patient education. But you can save money and that relates to cost which can have a positive impact on revenue. Recent studies associate patient education with cost savings. We talked about one of these a few episodes ago where they used the term "patient activation", which is secret code for patient education.
The article states that patients who have more knowledge, skills and confidence in managing their medical care have better outcomes. Patients who were less informed and educated had poorer outcomes and it costs hospitals between eight and 21% more to care for those patients. So there's clearly a connection between patient education and hospital revenue.
