After an epic first day reaching Otokomi Lake—highlighted in our last video—this installment follows my wife and me as we wake up to a stunning sunrise, brew backcountry coffee, and fuel up with freeze-dried meals. Surrounded by beautiful waterfalls, clear glacier mountain lakes, and jaw-dropping mountain landscapes, we pack up and hike the 10.9-mile trail back to our car at the trailhead. Having gotten engaged midway to Sky Pond and returning to hike it post-wedding, this trip marks my wife’s first backpacking experience and our first Glacier backcountry journey.

After securing our coveted lottery spot for wilderness permits, we drove from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Minneapolis, flew to Kalispell, and picked up our rental to reach Apgar Village. Navigating the east side near Saint Mary Lake without a Going-to-the-Sun Road pass, we were greeted by wildflowers and towering peaks from the start. The return hike offers more breathtaking views—cascading waterfalls cutting through lush forests, crystal-clear lakes reflecting the rugged mountains, and vibrant wildflowers dotting the path.

Waking at dawn, we’re treated to a sunrise that bathes Otokomi Lake in golden light, with the crisp air and mountain silence setting the tone. After coffee and a hearty meal, we break camp, soaking in the last views of the dramatic landscape. The descent is filled with awe-inspiring scenery—waterfalls roaring nearby, lakes shimmering under the sky, and peaks standing in sharp contrast. This 2-day, 1-night trek with 2,316 feet of elevation gain reaffirms why the mountains are our sanctuary.
