Louis Italian-American Restaurant (a.k.a Louis’ place) was a real restaurant of that name and actually located at 3531 White Plains Road in the Gun Hill section of The Bronx in New York City. It was operated from as far back as the 1930's and remained opened to after the The Godfather films were famous and closed it’s doors in 1977. It was a favorite mob-haunt for genuine, homestyle Italian (Sicilian) cooking. The scene was actually filmed in the restaurant as it was in 1971 and Godfather and remnants of is ornate tin ceiling and renovations of the old-fashioned toilet still can be seen inside the store today though it is condemned now. Young Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) get involved in the family business and assassinates and guns down Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo (played by Al Lettieri) and corrupt New York Police Department Captain Mark McCluskey (played by Sterling Hayden) at dinner. It is by far one of the best choreographed and tense-filled gangster scenes in all cinematic history. The tensions of the Italian rambling language that Michael could barely understand. The screeches of the IRT Seventh Avenue line is heard outside as it pulls into Gun Hill Road station. The film made one of the best films of all time on many list and, who knows, Louis' place in The Bronx may very well have supposedly served the best veal in the city. It was a real place and I found it standing last night. It’s still there, but who knows for how long. Quite and experience riding subways for for hours in the middle of the night to do this shoot. I will never forget it.
