Host Kristen Hampton guides a wall-to-wall tour of Royal Manor Elementary—from first day fundamentals in kindergarten to fifth-grade computers in history. Peek into classrooms, music, art, gym, recess life, student patrols, Secret Santa shopping, and a sit-down with Principal Mr. Rotella about what’s next for Royal Manor.
Kindergarten (03:13): Arrival routines, name writing, alphabet recognition, numerals & counting, listening & sharing, projects (bunnies, color-by-number). AM 8:30–10:15; PM 12:30–2:15. Teachers emphasize confidence and social growth.
First Grade (05:10): Spring craft integration—sequencing steps, using tools safely, and tying literacy to holiday themes.
Second Grade (07:11): Public reading builds voice & poise; peers answer comprehension questions to train active listening. Cursive samples show progress; animal unit corner; show-and-tell elevates research & speaking skills (cat “shakes” for treats!).
Third Grade (09:32): Helpers of the day, “think/reading desk,” seasons bulletin board. In music, Mrs. Benson scaffolds note names → fingering → ensemble play on recorders.
Fourth Grade (11:59): Five-step bookmaking (rough → final → cover glue-up → paint marbling → hand-sew binding → endpapers). Students Bri, Justin, Jodi share favorites; several titles head to the Young Authors Conference (3/25).
Fifth Grade (14:14): Mr. Scaner’s class uses The Oregon Trail to practice rationing, timing departures, river crossings, hunting, repairs—history through simulation and reflective decision-making.
Recess (15:40): First graders demo tetherball (wraps, ropes, “holding”), older students add football; swings/jump ropes dominate for many girls; jungle bars & tire mounds for climbing; play = social practice.
Busing/Boundaries (17:12): New area: N of McCutcheon • W of Stygler • E of I-270 • S of Ambassador Commons. Enrollment projected from ~415 → ~430. Students voice jitters about new friends/teachers; parents split between continuity vs. capacity balance.
Student Patrols (19:00): ~30 fifth-grade walkers selected by teacher team; shifts 7:45–8:20 & 2:20–2:45; stationed at neighborhood corners; conduct expectations (no rudeness/running in streets); regular inspections; posts rotate bi-weekly.
Secret Santa (21:03): Budgeting, selecting, and surprise-keeping; student-run checkout; gifts for family; lots of pride (and bargains).
Principal Interview (23:02): Mr. Rotella: proud of shared tradition—students, staff, parents all invested. Daily personal goal: be present in classrooms. Future: facility upgrades (e.g., air conditioning) and even foreign language offerings to keep learning joyful and broad.
