39th Battalion History
Raised in October 1941 from volunteers serving in the 3rd Military District, as an Independant Battalion with a strength of 1500, for service in the 8th Military District. Departed Darley Camp, 26th December 1941, embarked in HMT Aquitania, 27th
December 1941.
First white troops to cross the Kokoda Track, first unit to face the Japanese in Papua. Fought unsupported from 27th July to 27th August 1942.
When relieved at Efogi 5th September 1942, the unit strength was 185 all ranks. Reinforced (total reinforcements 800) and recommitted Sanananda, Buna, Gona. At Soputa, Unit strength was 5 officers and 27 other ranks. Removed from the order of battle 3rd July 1943
