(HD) Metro trains in Athens 30/03/13

Whilst in Athens, we also take a ride aboard the Athens Metro System of which three routes cross the city centre with many more lines proposed for future development. The first route Line 1 opened in 1869 as the Athens and Piraeus Railway running 15 miles from end to end. The line was electrified in 1904 and remained Athens' only underground system until the construction of Lines 2 and 3 in January 2000. The line continued to sport the name of the Athens and Piraeus Railway until 2011 when it was absorbed into the new metro management company STATSY S.A. The primary traction on Line 1 consists of the 1983 built 8th Batch Stock which are now the oldest stock in use by the company.

After a short ride from Piraeus to Omonoia, we then take a trip across on Line 2 to Akropoli station aboard a 1st Generation stock that was built in 2000 for the opening of the two new lines.

Later in the day we find ourselves at Syntagma station on Line 3, located underneath the Greek Parliament building. Here we see one of the 2003 built 2nd Generation stock and a 1st Generation stock, both heading westbound towards Athens International Airport.
