In 1978, Formula 1 briefly stopped being a racing series. It turned into a Dyson product demo.
Why? Because Brabham showed up with a car that was literally… a vacuum cleaner.
The BT46B, better known as the “fan car,” had a giant fan strapped to its back. Officially, the fan was for “cooling the engine.” In reality? It sucked air out from underneath the car. It glued itself to the track like a gecko on Red Bull. The thing looked absurd, but it made physics its personal playground.
Niki Lauda drove it once. He won. Comfortably. And when asked about the car, he smirked and said, “Yeah, I could have lapped the entire field if I wanted.” That’s the racing equivalent of dropping the controller mid-game because you’re that far ahead. Even Lauda admitted the car felt “boring” to drive because it was too stable. Imagine being so fast… that domination feels dull.
Rivals were furious. Lotus screamed it was cheating. Ferrari demanded answers. The FIA inspected it, shrugged, and said: “Well… technically it’s legal.” But then TV cameras caught mechanics sweeping piles of gravel, dust, and even loose programs sucked up by the fan out of the Brabham garage. The thing wasn’t just winning races—it was vacuuming up half of Sweden.
The FIA panicked. The fan car was banned after a single race. Brabham’s vacuum cleaner didn’t just hoover up gravel—it hoovered an entire loophole out of F1 forever. It remains the shortest-lived but most devastatingly effective car in Grand Prix history.
