Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, performs a detailed serve analysis of Maria Sakkari, one of the top pro players on the WTA. Jeff explains what Sakkari does really well, and points out two specific areas where she can still improve her great serve. He also shares five amazing tips that can make a huge difference and allow you to develop a world class serve.
Jeff reveals powerful serve cues that you can’t see in regular motion, and breaks down Sakkari’s serve in the following five areas:
1. Serve Routine
Sakkari goes over a consistent serve routine that helps her to stay focused and present. Jeff encourages you to self reflect and check on what type of routines you have established before serving.
2. Stance
Sakkari uses a pinpoint stance. At the start of the motion, Maria leans forward to transfer the weight to her front foot. Then, she rocks back to unweight it and transfers the weight to her back foot. Finally, Sakkari lifts her front foot toe off the ground as she starts her service motion.
3. First Move
Sakkari’s racquet is a little bit on the low end, although, this isn’t wrong and it’s more related with her serve style. Sakkari’s tossing hand is leading as she releases the ball, and she also delays her hitting arm before reaching the trophy position.
4. Trophy Position
Sakkari brings her back foot up right after tossing the ball at a great height. She’s also placing a lot of weight on her back leg, and pushes well off the ground.
5. Racquet Drop - Finish
Sakkari has a great racquet drop, and keeps her hand below the elbow. She’s bringing her tossing arm down and pulling it into her body for more extension and acceleration. She lands onto the court with a massive kick back on her back leg and perfect balance.
Jeff considers that Maria Sakkari can still improve her serve on these two specific aspects:
1. Trophy Position
Sakkari keeps her hitting arm too straight, and Jeff would advise her to bend it sooner. Maria should get her hand closer to the head at a 90 degree angle. Jeff thinks that Sakkari’s got a low elbow, and she could perform serve drills such as the half serve to work on this specific area. However, there’s also a possibility that her lower body is not working as well as it could, despite of her tremendous athleticism.
2. Pronation
Sakkari doesn’t really pronate on her serve. She may be lacking some range of motion in her right shoulder and forearm. These small details can be tested by doing a physical assessment from a professional trainer or Racquet Fit Certified Coach.
Finally, Jeff praises Maria Sakkari’s incredible work ethic on and off the court. There’s no doubt that it shows in her outstanding athleticism and ability to hit such a fantastic serve.
