We have a limited amount of willpower each day? The more we use it, the more it depletes. So, it's crucial to use it wisely! You might make worse decisions at the end of the day and give into your vices. Perfectionism can sometimes serve to drain your willpower.
Hope plays a significant role in our lives. When we have positive feelings about the future, we're more likely to put in the effort required for success. Aim for a combination of desire and direction to have optimal achievement.
Which should you focus on intention or outcome? Really it depends on the situation. If it is a spaceship landing we focus on the outcome - does it land. When pursuing personal goals, particularly when we do not have control of the outcome it is worth deliberately thinking about intention.
So remember in sports, the focus on effort and technique can make a significant difference, rather than outcomes. With parenting, rather than solely praising outcomes, it's beneficial to acknowledge the effort exerted. This approach can help fosters long-term growth and success.
Humility is a desirable trait that can be challenging to measure. It involves having an open mind and recognizing that there's always something new to learn. If you tend to approach people and tasks with arrogance it is worth deliberately trying to stay humble you might have simply been lucky. There is a statistical concept of regression to the mean – large or small measurements when repeated tend to be closer to the mean..
Our perceptions can be influenced by preconceived notions. For example in a study prior to a lecture half the students were informed the new lecturer was warm, half cold. They saw the same lecture but the feedback provided about the warm lecturer was more generous. Try to be warm and competent. If you are cold yet competent people won’t like you. If you are warm and incompetent people people tend to feel sorry for you.
Flawed evidence can frequently occur when an expert is told a certain thing the impact of this will have on their analysis. Seeing a weapon at a crime scene seemingly means the witness is less likely to obtain a positive identification in an ID parade. Interestingly in ID parades the witness is less likely to select accurately the perpetrator if shown all the possibilities at the same point as opposed to being show each potential suspect individually.
When giving or receiving feedback bear in mind some people are like hawks (very critical) whereas others are like doves (very positive). Generally a hawk will provide their points more strongly.
The Matthew effect - where those who excel continue to improve, while others struggle to catch up. From the Bible “For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath” (Matthew 25:29) So a rich person will continue to become richer, a poor person will become poorer. The child who is good at reading will read more and become better, in part due to additional encouragement they receive.
Bureaucrats tend to be risk-averse where as entrepreneurs embrace risks to make the impossible possible. To cause a bureaucrat to take action point out a bigger risk will occur if no action is taken.
In terms of families firstborns siblings are more likely to exhibit rivalry than their other siblings. Rivals can be more similar to yourself than you may believe. The rival may represent underlying behaviours that you have and don’t want, which you are trying to repress these behaviours are also known as your shadow.
Individualism does in part relate to culture differences. If asked to select a pen, people in America tend to select the rarer colour, whereas people in Korea tend to select the most common colour. This study suggests that Koreans are encouraged to believe they are one of a large group, whereas in the West there has been a rise of narcissism and people thinking they’re important.
An interestingly metric to measure individualism at a population level, relates to the number of unique names that are occurring. The numerator is the top 20 common names, the denominator being all other names, this fraction is smaller in societies which promote individualism.
If everyone perceives themselves as an individual there is sadly a reduction in trust and a rise in narcissism. Generally if you have trust in others you generally have a better life. When you are giving trust it is best to give 100-percent, rather than partial trust which can backfire.
Remember, knowledge is power, so keep seeking to broaden your understanding of the human mind and behaviour.
