++ Episode description ++
In today's episode, we delve into Bronze-Age Anatolia, a region once characterized by cooperation among its many small kingdoms. These kingdoms worked together to ensure the smooth operation of Assyrian trading routes from Mesopotamia. However, as time went on, rivalries among the local kings took hold, replacing cooperation with constant warfare.
Initially, the Assyrian merchants tolerated the political chaos in Anatolia due to the necessity of keeping the trade routes open. Some kings believed that unifying the region under a single kingdom would bring much-needed order and stability. King Anitta embraced this vision and pursued military means to achieve it.
However, the prolonged state of warfare began to wear on the Assyrian traders, leading them to reconsider their investments in Anatolia. The risk of losing everything in a failed expedition became too great, prompting them to abandon the region.
