One of the problems with an air core motor is that since there is no iron core inside the drive coil for magnetic flux to go through, the magnetic field of a magnet won't necessarily all pass through the coil in order for the magnetized coil to act on. By having magnets in attraction on either side of a coil, a lot more magnetic flux passes through the coil.
Because this motor has a double recovery circuit (one set of 3 coils receives input energy, feeds it's back electromotive force into the second set of coils, which re-uses it's own back electromotive force), incoming energy gets recycled twice which allows the motor to run on a very low current. Less than 10 milliamps.
