Hey folks, I was trying to find a video that gave an example of the SOUND of the Steven Volpp's design, released as the Peavey Radial Pro 1000 drums, and could not find hardly anything other than very bad camera-phone audio. So today I dug out my old Radial Pro 1000's and set up three nice condenser mics--one about 2' in front of the kick, and the two overheads. Mic pre is a True Precision 8, which is basically gain only, no color. From there to an Apogee AD-16x into Logic Pro 9, then straight to a CD recorder. The eq's are FLAT--no hi-pass filters, no nothing. This is just the sound of the drums and my crappy playing, no effects, no compression, this is just the drums and the room. I put on a set of brand new clear Emperors on the tops, bottoms are G1 clears, gave them a quick tune, and fired up the iPad. Snare is a coated pinstripe with a thin 3/4" zero-ring. Kick is a P3 with some sort of double-ply ported reso head and a couple towels for muffling. Felt beater. Wood tip 747 oak sticks. Kit is 22x18 kick, 14x5.5? snare, toms are 10-12-14-16 all hanging. No muffling on any toms. I might do another video with a little eq and close mics, just to show the potential of this cool design.
Hope this helps to answer somebody's question: "What do those strange-lookin' Peavey drums sound like?"
Take care, y'all.
