Enlit on the Road visited the Cortes-La Muela hydroelectric complex outside Valencia to understand the role of Europe's largest pumped storage hydropower plant in Spain's energy transition.
Borja Gonzalez, the Director of Mediterranean Generation at Iberdrola, guides us around the facility, which has a total generation capacity of 1800 MW, a pumping power of 1500 MW and cost €1.2 billion. It acts as a giga battery for the grid, integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind. The facility can adjust power output in seconds, crucial for system stability.
