sequential and parallel reactions class 11 | sequential and parallel reactions |
Welcome to the most challenging part of our Mole Concept series! This lecture is a deep dive into Sequential Reactions, Parallel Reactions, and the critical concepts of Percentage Purity and Percentage Yield—absolute must-knows for JEE Advanced, JEE Main, and NEET aspirants.
We teach you the master strategy to solve multi-step (sequential) problems where the product of one reaction becomes the reactant for the next. We also clarify the difference between the Theoretical Yield (what stoichiometry predicts) and the Actual Yield (what you get in reality) using the Percentage Yield formula.
Mastering this concept is essential for tackling high-level competitive exam problems in physical chemistry.

📝 Core Concepts Covered in Depth:
1. Reactions with Impurities
Percentage Purity: How to calculate the actual mass of the reactant that participates in the reaction when an impure sample is given.
Stoichiometry with Impurities: The golden rule: only the pure part of the mass can be used in mole calculations.
2. Percentage Yield
Theoretical Yield: The maximum amount of product predicted by a balanced chemical equation (calculated via stoichiometry).
Actual Yield: The amount of product actually obtained from the reaction (always given in the question).
Formula Derivation: Percentage Yield (% Yield) = (Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield) times 100.
3. Advanced Reaction Types
Sequential Reactions (Multi-Step): Learning to link two or more consecutive reactions where the product of the first step is the reactant of the second. The concept of the Limiting Reagent dictates the entire sequence.
Parallel Reactions: Analyzing reactions where a single reactant forms two or more products simultaneously via different paths.
