Miami Fort Trail: Earthworks, Glaciers and Pawpaws.

Описание: Miami Fort trail, located in Shawnee lookout park, follows the walls of an ancient Hopewell earthwork. The fortified hilltop was included in Squire and Davis' landmark work "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley" published in 1848. While the ancient fort is about 2000 years old, the hillside has another unique historical aspect.
Over 300,000 years ago the hill was covered by a pre-illinoian glacier. It left a mix of gravel sand and other till atop the hill. The hill somehow avoided being destroyed by the following two glaciations. Now the well drained soil on top of the hill is a great environment for Pawpaw trees.
