PaaS, short for Platform as a service, is a cloud computing model in which a third-party provider delivers hardware and software tools – usually those needed for application development – over the internet. A PaaS provider hosts the hardware and software on its own infrastructure, which frees developers from having to install in-house hardware or software.

PaaS doesn't replace an entire business's IT infrastructure, but instead incorporates various underlying cloud infrastructure components that are operated and managed by the service provider. PaaS offerings can be used for mobile app and cross-platform app development, as well as DevOps tools.
