July and August are some of the warmest months here in San Diego, and September often continues with hot days. If you're itching to start your fall crops, here's what you need to know to do it right.
Tip 1: START SEEDS IN THE SHADE
It's too hot in our greenhouse and even too warm in sunny areas. Using a shade tree or even shade cloth can keep seeds ten degrees cooler and protect the seeds & soil from getting too hot.
Tip 2: USE THE RIGHT SOIL MIX
Soil moisture is so important! Seeds need moisture, but soil that holds onto water too much can lead to harmful fungal growth. Use soil that allows air to get in and water to move through your pots.
Tip 3: BOTTOM WATER YOUR STARTS
With a simple tray, you can allow your soil to water itself! Dry soil will pull water up as needed and naturally. This allows you to water less often and also avoid issues with over-saturation.
Tip 4: INCREASE THE AIRFLOW
Airflow is key to preventing mold and fungal growth which are harmful to seedlings. It's also useful for building strong seedlings. Growing in an area with limited airflow? Try something as simple as a box fan!
