Planform images (Left) and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) over a ~24 hour period. Images and DEMs are taken every five minutes. This experiment was conducted in the eXperimental Landscape Evolution facility at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory at the University of Minnesota.
A mixture of fine silica and water are place in a 50cm x 50cm x 30cm (LxWxH) box. The main outlet where water and sediment leave is at the bottom of the screen, and the left, right, and top boundaries are walls. A landscape begins to develop after being subjected to a constant base-level lowering rate and precipitation. Typical rates in these experiments are ~10 mm/hr (base-level lowering rate) and ~40 mm/hr (precipitation rate).
