Devotees from all across the Dehradun stand in a long queue to offer water on Lingam. The beauty of this occasion intensifies with Tapkeshwar Mela. Tapkeshwar Mela is one of the most sought fairs of Dehradun city among locals. After offering their pray to Lord Shiva, people enjoys the fair which lasts for few days after Shivratri. People from all age group come to Tapkeshwar Mela to prey and enjoy the fair

As you know, Tapkeshwar Temple is one of the prominent religious places of Dehradun. It is one of the places among tourist places which are very popular for their natural scenic beauty and peaceful ambiance. This temple is situated on the bank of Nandi rive, Nandi who is believed to be closest to Lord Shiva. This temple is surrounded by mountains and forests which makes its ambiance peaceful and calm. A lot of people all across the neighbouring places come here to seek the blessings from Lord Shiva on Shivratri. The most significant aspect of this place is the Lingam which is inside the cave.

History of Tapkeshwar Temple

It is said that the Lingam which is in the cave is not manmade; it is naturally carved on the stone. The cave is referred as Drona Caves, after the name of Guru Dronacharya. Guru Dronacharya was the teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas in the epic of Mahabharat. It is believed that Guru Dronacharya used to live in the cave of Tapkeshwar Temple and worship Lingam. Some people also believe that there used to be a continuous downpour of milk drop on the Lingam, but now water downpours in the place of milk

The ambiance of this place is so peaceful and calm that one could even come here to do meditation. If you are in Dehradun, you must come here at least once to experience the beauty of this place.

Visitors can visit Tapkeshwar Temple any time of the year, but people who want to witness the prime of this temple must visit it on the day of Shivratri. Ideal season to visit Tapkeshwar is summer season as you can enjoy in the river best in summer. There is no entry fee to enter the Tapkeshwar temple including parking except for Shivratri. Through there is no restriction on staying time in Tapkeshwar but it is preferred that you should visit this place between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. On the day of Shivratri one can come to Tapkeshwar Temple to offer water from 12:00 am to until evening.

People who are from outside Dehradun and want to visit this place, first board a bus to ISBT Dehradun and from there onward you can hire a cab or you can also take a bus to Parade Ground and then take a bus to Tapkeshwar. The distance from ISBT Dehradun to Tapkeshwar is around 10 KM which would take around 30 minutes to reach there.
