Kids can be triggered by a variety of things, and sometimes it can be in unexpected ways or times.
As foster parents, it can sometimes catch us off guard, and as we reflect, we may realize what was going on.
In this video I share an example of a child hiding and ways we can engage during this moment. The first example is not necessarily wrong - sometimes this response makes perfect sense for the moment. In the second example, I take a more nuanced approach and meet the child where they are at instead of requesting that they conform to my requests. You may find that this approach will help you discover what the need is or what the trigger was that made them feel scared. Collaborating on safe places can help you learn more about the child and what they need most from you.
