Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor, Op. 45 stands as the most ambitious and symphonically conceived of his three violin sonatas. Composed in 1886–87, the work reflects a mature Grieg, combining Norwegian nationalist colour with a broader Romantic intensity and structural command. The first movement, marked Allegro molto ed appassionato, immediately establishes a dramatic and urgent character.

The opening theme, presented with bold energy, sets a turbulent emotional landscape driven by rhythmic insistence and harmonic tension. Rather than treating the violin as a mere melodic voice accompanied by piano, Grieg creates a true partnership between the two instruments.
