Dignitaries from across Nigeria’s political and diplomatic circles gathered at the Murtala Muhammed Arcade to honour former Head of State, Murtala Muhammed.
Representing President Bola Tinubu was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. Also present was former Chief of Staff to ex-president Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, including the Angolan ambassador.
Organisers said the ceremony was a moment to reflect on Muhammed’s brief but remarkable leadership, often remembered for anti-corruption measures, sweeping reforms and a strong push for national discipline.
Muhammed ruled from 1975 until his assassination in February 1976, a tenure that also set in motion the eventual relocation of the nation’s capital from Lagos to Abuja.
