The eukaryotic cell contains many organelles. Among these, the nucleus is the largest and one of the most important organelles.
This cell biology video covers the details of this incredibly important organelle - Nucleus.
▬ 📌 Nucleus
The nucleus is present in the middle of the cell and contains all the genetic material of the cell.
Its main functions are to house the genetic material and passage of genetic information from one generation to another. Also, it directs the protein synthesis in the cytoplasm and synthesizes all types of RNAs.
▬ 📌 Nuclear Envelope
The eukaryotic nucleus is a double-membraned structure. These double membranes are known as nuclear membranes or nuclear envelopes. Important structures of nuclear envelope discussed in the video are:
🟠 Outer nuclear membrane
🟠 Inner nuclear membrane
🟠 Perinuclear cisterna
🟠 Nuclear lamina
▬ 📌 Nuclear Pores
Nuclear pores are about 80 nm in diameter. They are formed by the fusion of the inner and outer nuclear membranes. Nuclear pores allow control of the transport of substances into and out of the nucleus. They are associated with the nuclear pore complex or (NPC). You can find the structure of a detailed examination of the nuclear pore complex in the video.
▬ 📌 Nucleolus
There may be one, several, or even no visible nucleoli in a nucleus. The nucleolus is the ribosome production factory as it produces millions of ribosomes at each cell division.
There are three major components of the nucleolus. These are:
🔵 Fibrillar Center (FC)
🔵 Dense Fibrillar Component (DFC)
🔵 Granular Component (GC)
▬ 📌 Nucleoplasm and Nuclear Bodies
Nucleoplasm is also known as karyoplasm. It is a viscous matrix that suspends various nuclear bodies present in the nucleus and maintains the shape of the nucleus.
Nuclear bodies are membrane-less structures found in the cell nuclei of eukaryotic cells. These are:
🟢 Cajal Bodies
🟢 Gemini Bodies (GEMs)
🟢 Polymorphic Interphase Karyosomal Association (PIKA)
🟢 Promyelocytic Leukemia Protein (PML bodies)
🟢 Nuclear Speckles
These are just the highlights of the video. Do watch the video to learn them in detail and find out about nuclear transport, assembly, and disassembly of nuclear envelopes.
