Easy fix for broken L-handle on Peloton bike. The plastic L-handle that controls the seat depth (fore and aft) adjustment on my bike broke. The internal ratchet mechanism stripped or snapped, resulting in a handle that would spin but not turn the underlying bolt.
I reached out to Peloton’s customer support center via internet chat and e-mail. They did not provide much help. I was told that if the bolt could not be removed, I’d have to replace the ENTIRE FRAME - $1,295 retail - since the bike is no longer under standard warranty. (Side note: I have had the bike just over a year. It is in otherwise perfect condition.) They were willing to cut the price to $750.
I did an internet search and found some threads from others who had the same issue. I found out that if you are able to remove the damaged bolt, you can order a replacement part for about $15. However, getting the bolt out was my problem. I tried pliers, channel locks, vice grips, etc., with no success. The outer sheath would just spin around the bolt without loosening it.
I removed the seat post and weight holders, and was able to use a hacksaw to remove the plastic outer sheath. Once the underlying bolt was exposed, I was able to remove with an adjustable wrench. Until I can get a replacement part, I was able to use a 8mm (Metric 8-1.25 x 40mm) bolt from the hardware store to secure the seat. Total cost: less than $3.
