Eric Huntley, activist, publisher and author, was born in 1929 in British Guiana and emigrated to Britain in the late 1950s. Together with his wife, Jessica, the Huntleys not only participated in, but also led many significant grassroots campaigns, including becoming founder members of the Caribbean Education and Community Workers Association, the Black Parents Movement, the organisers of the 1981 Black People’s Day of Action march and the Supplementary School Movement, created to supplement the shortcomings of an education system that was failing Black children.
"We are losing our Black Bookshops, but we cannot lose the spaces where we can meet and share." Eric Huntley makes a strong appeal to secure spaces where radical ideas and stories of identity can be shared in across progressive communities and implores us to keep the legacy of Black and migrant narratives fresh by highlighting importance of the Annual Huntley Conference. Since 2006, the Huntley conference has unlocked deeply engaging narratives – striking deep rooted chords, revealing stories - hidden within communities or suppressed by post-colonial hierarchies - celebrating important moments in post war collective histories. Our impact bursts through the archives - as we continue to inspire and develop the next generation of artists, curators, activists, historians, educators, archivists: social change makers who ignite creativity and innovate in cultural spaces across the global Diaspora.
