After 22 years with the Chicago Police Department—16 in homicide—I've seen what the job costs. PTSD, alcohol, suicide. I lost two friends just in the last couple of years. Too many to count over the years.
This Sidebar isn't about tactics or legal issues. It's about the mental toll of working cases like the murder of 6-year-old Allen Kalfus (Episode 23, coming Monday).
I talk about:
What PTSD looks like in cops (it's not flashbacks—it's quieter)
Why cops drink (and when it becomes a problem)
My therapy journey (and why I don't give a shit about the stigma)
The two friends I lost (one to suicide, one to alcohol)
Resources that helped me (and might help you)
If you're struggling, talk to someone. It's not weakness. It's survival.
Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other.
