Jyotirao Phule was a pioneering social reformer in 19th-century India, known for his significant contributions to education, especially for women and marginalized communities. His work on education, often considered revolutionary, challenged traditional social norms and laid the foundation for a more inclusive educational system.
Key Aspects of Phule’s Views on Higher Education:

Education for Women and Marginalized Communities:
Jyotirao Phule was one of the earliest advocates for the education of women and lower-caste individuals, particularly the Dalits (then referred to as “untouchables”). He was deeply critical of the Brahmanical social system that restricted education based on caste and gender. He believed that education should not be confined to any particular caste or gender, and he actively worked to provide educational opportunities for these marginalized groups.
First Girls’ School (1848): Phule is credited with establishing the first school for girls in Pune in 1848, a time when girls’ education was almost unheard of in India. He worked alongside his wife, Savitribai Phule, who played an instrumental role as a teacher in the school. This was a direct challenge to the prevailing social norms, where girls and women were denied basic education.
Promoting Female Literacy: He believed that educating women would have a cascading effect on society, improving the lives of entire families. In his time, many believed that women had no need for formal education. Phule strongly opposed this notion and believed that the education of women was vital for the social and economic progress of society.

Critique of Traditional Education Systems:
Phule was critical of the education system introduced by the British, which he saw as a tool for reinforcing the caste system and perpetuating inequality. The colonial education system was largely designed to serve the interests of the British and the upper-caste sections of society, neglecting the needs and potential of the lower castes and women.

The Importance of Vernacular Language: Phule understood the importance of language in the educational process. He emphasized the use of local languages over Sanskrit and English, believing that people from rural and lower-caste communities would learn better in their mother tongues

Central to Phule’s educational philosophy was his belief in social justice. He believed that education was a powerful weapon against the rigid caste-based stratification of society. Phule’s work was not just about imparting knowledge but about transforming society and breaking down traditional social hierarchies.
The Concept of “Satyashodhak Samaj”: In 1873, Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Truth Seekers), a reformist organization aimed at eradicating caste-based discrimination and promoting education for the oppressed. The Samaj sought to empower people through education, and it focused on the upliftment of Dalits, women, and other marginalized groups. One of its key objectives was to educate people about their rights and help them realize their potential

Emphasis on Equality and Human Dignity: Phule believed that education should teach the values of equality, justice, and human dignity. He was deeply critical of the Brahmanical interpretation of religion, which justified the caste system and denied basic rights to the lower castes. Phule promoted the idea that true education would challenge these dogmas and empower people to lead free and dignified lives.
