UCI Health | How to Safely Transfer a Patient from Their Bed

Описание: Proper body mechanics and form are foundational to safe patient transfers. This video from UCI Health provides a step-by-step demonstration of the procedure to transfer a patient from the bed to a wheelchair.

These steps can also be applied to other transfer surfaces, including commodes, showers, cars or chairs.

Steps include:
Preparing the room and transfer surface (0:25)
• Clear materials that may cause a tripping hazard, like rugs.
• Move sheets, blankets and pillows away from patient to ensure a clear space for movement.
• Engage the wheelchair’s brakes, then remove the armrests to ensure a clear path for the transfer.

Preparing to move the patient (1:34)
• Bend the patient’s knees up in preparation to roll them from their back to their side.
• Keep your back locked in an upright, straight position. Bend your knees to lower yourself.
• Place one hand on the shoulder and the other at the hip to assist the patient in moving from their back to their side.

Helping the patient off the bed (3:08)
• If a gait belt is available, place it low and tight around the patient’s hips.
• Choose footwear that provides proper support and tread to limit slipping.

Moving the patient to the chair (3:46)
• Stagger your feet with one behind the other to receive the weight of the patient and help them maintain their own balance.
• Pivot the patient toward the seat of the wheelchair, guiding the patient at the hips.
• Once the patient is in line with the seat of the wheelchair, bend your knees and squat to lower the patient.
