Oklahoma State Auditor Cindy Byrd warned at the State Capitol that Oklahoma could be forced to cover hundreds of millions of dollars in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) costs unless payment error rates are reduced.
Byrd said new federal rules tied to stricter eligibility enforcement could trigger penalties beginning in 2027, potentially shifting SNAP costs from the federal government to Oklahoma taxpayers. Federal data shows Oklahoma’s current SNAP payment error rate is nearly double the threshold that could result in funding losses.
During the press conference, Byrd outlined why SNAP spending surged during the pandemic, raised concerns about the lack of independent eligibility audits, and said the state has roughly eight months to begin lowering its error rate to avoid penalties.
State leaders say failure to meet new federal standards could add major pressure to an already strained state budget.
