North Korea recently held parliamentary elections in March 2026, but they are very different from elections in democratic countries. In these elections, people vote for members of the Supreme People’s Assembly, which is the country’s legislature. However, each position usually has only one candidate, and those candidates are already selected by the ruling party. Because of this, there is no real competition.
The official results claimed extremely high participation and approval, with almost all voters supporting the candidates. Such numbers are common in North Korean elections, but outside observers consider them symbolic rather than genuine expressions of public choice.
Kim Jong Un himself was not actually running in this election. Even so, he remains the most powerful leader in the country as head of the ruling Workers’ Party and the State Affairs Commission. His position does not depend on winning elections in the way leaders in democratic systems do.
