The Lamia, from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, is one of my favorite Genesis songs. The Lamb is my favorite Genesis album, if not my all time favorite rock album. I have played a version of the piano part of this song on guitar for many years, based on Trouble Clef's rendition, but now I have decided to tackle the piano. I believe this piano version is 100% true to Tony Bank's original 1974 studio album recording. However, my performance is not 100%. I also stopped around verse 7, as there is no point to repeat everything again the same, until I am ready to add guitar and synth fills. This is the piano part only; no combining base lines, flutes, synths, vocal melodies into the arrangement.
A shout-out to Prog Session's isolated piano post of The Lamia which was my source for critical listening. After reviewing all the isolated-piano posts and covers on YouTube, I concluded that Prog Session's post was the only one true to the original album. I have confirmed that further after receiving my 50th anniversary release of The Lamb box set with surround sound BD. There is one back channel, ch6, on the Dolby True HD 7.1 title with mostly isolated piano, aside from some sporadic loud interjections of vocals. How do I know Prog Sessions post is the REAL DEAL? At the 1:30 mark, Tony Banks actually makes a mistake. 😮 Coming out of the G# M7 chord, when Tony hits the F transition with his right hand he accidentally hits another note - I think a G which is disharmonic. It's in the 50th anniversary release too. Surprising they never fixed that.
I also never knew there was a classical guitar part (BR ch) - it was so buried under the keyboards in the mix. Same for Anyway which I am also learning - there is a beautiful Hackett classical gtr verse part on the back channels.
The Lamia is the most difficult piano piece I have leaned to date, more so than the title track "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" (which easier to learn, but harder to master).
Disclaimer: In general, there is a key struck for every eighth-note beat of every chord of this song. In some spots, I missed playing the last note on some chords in transition to the next, although all notes of the chords are represented. I also know my rhythm is slightly wrong on the D# min chord transition to DM at the end of refrain.
I write verbosely. Sorry, but hey if you read all of this, thanks!
