Let’s talk about what’s happening behind the curtain with NIO.
Over the past few years, something major has been unfolding — and most retail investors haven’t fully processed it.
Between mid-2022 and mid-2025, institutional ownership in NIO didn’t just dip… it collapsed by more than 61%.
That’s not a small trim. That’s a structural shift.
As of Thursday, 505 institutional investors still hold about 317.5 million shares combined. But compared to where we were just a few years ago, that’s a dramatically lighter footprint.
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
D.E. Shaw currently leads the institutional pack.
UBS comes next with 24.5 million shares — about $121.5 million worth — but they quietly reduced their position by nearly 15%.
BNP Paribas? They moved the opposite direction. They increased their holdings by over 16%, now sitting at 21.6 million shares.
Jane Street also added slightly, holding 19.5 million shares.
Then we get to the Wall Street giants.
Morgan Stanley trimmed its position in the fourth quarter — ending a two-quarter buying streak. They now hold just over 15.2 million shares, down about 5.5%.
Goldman Sachs, however, made a bold move — boosting its stake by nearly 58% to 14.4 million shares.
And then there’s JPMorgan Chase.
They didn’t just add — they exploded their position, increasing holdings by 268% in a single quarter.
WT Asset Management cut back sharply, reducing its stake by 32%, even after returning to the stock following a three-year break.
But through all of this shifting and repositioning, one name stands above the rest.
CYVN Holdings, based in Abu Dhabi.
They remain NIO’s largest overall shareholder with a 21.7% stake — built through nearly $3 billion in investments made in 2023.
So what does all this mean?
Institutional money hasn’t disappeared completely — but it has reshuffled.
Some are stepping back.
Some are doubling down.
Some are making aggressive tactical bets.
The real question isn’t just who owns NIO today…
It’s who believes in where it’s going next.
