EFFICIENCY OF COMPRESSOR
The performance of compressor is measured by calculating Volumetric efficiency, Isothermal efficiency and Mechanical efficiency of compressor
Volumetric Efficiency:
It is the ratio of volume of free air delivered per stroke to the volume of air swept by piston during the stroke. When intake conditions are not given, it is taken as S.T.P. conditions, pressure 1.01325 and temperature 15°C.
Volumetric efficiency =
Volume of F.A.D./Stroke division of Volume swept/Stroke
Normally, volumetric efficiency lies between 70 to 80% depending on type of compressor.
Factors, which reduce volumetric efficiency are :
1. Mainly volumetric efficiency depends on clearance. As clearance volume increases, volumetric efficiency decreases.
2. Restricted passage and leakage at inlet valves.
3. Piston ring leakage.
4. As pressure ratio increases, volumetric efficiency decreases.
5. If the speed of rotation is high, charge of air taken in is less, which decreases efficiency.
6. Fresh air comes in contact with hot wall and gets expanded which decreases the charge taken in, therefore volumetric efficiency.
Isothermal Efficiency:
It is the ratio of isothermal power to the indicated power in kW.
Isothermal efficiency
=
Isothermal power / Indicated power
Overall isothermal efficiency of compressor =
Isothermal power / Shaft power
The compression process in reciprocating compressor may approach to low speed of compression and cylinder cooling. Therefore, isothermal efficiency is used in reciprocating compressor.
Mechanical Efficiency: Indicated power is also known as air power. It is the power obtained from the actual indicator diagram taken during a test on the compressor.
Shaft power is the power required to drive the compressor or is power delivered to the shaft of the compressor.
Mechanical efficiency.
nm = Indicated power / Shaft power
