The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released its recommendations for childhood vaccines, which differ significantly from the recent guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The AAP is recommending immunization against 18 diseases, including RSV, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rotavirus, influenza, and meningococcal disease. In contrast, the CDC had reduced its recommendations to 11 diseases.
Both the AAP and CDC recommend vaccinating children against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, Hib, pneumococcal, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, HPV, and chickenpox.
The CDC had recommended that only high-risk children receive immunizations for RSV, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, dengue, and meningococcal diseases, but the AAP still recommends these for all children, except for the dengue vaccine.
The AAP has called the CDC's guidance "dangerous and unnecessary," stating that it departs from longstanding medical evidence and no longer offers the optimal way to prevent illnesses in children.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the CDC, has stated that the updated CDC childhood schedule continues to protect children against serious diseases while aligning with international norms.
Insurance will still cover vaccines that are no longer recommended by the CDC, such as the flu and COVID-19 vaccines. | #AmericanAcademyofPediatrics #childhoodvaccinerecommendations #differ #CDC #health #healthnews #medicine #medical #medicalnews #healthcare
