The story:
A fisherman was the first person who located the ancient shipwreck in 1985 near the western rocky shore of Peristera, at a depth of 28 m. : a large commercial vessel, possibly from Athens, sank there around 425 BC. It was loaded with thousands of wine pots (amphorae) from Mendi (ancient city in Northern Greece) and Peparithos (modern day Skopelos island), areas well known in antiquity for their wine. The heap of amphorae, extending on the seabed in 25 m., gives us an impression about the size of the ship. This shipwreck is one of the most important of classic antiquity. The excavation was conducted by archaeologists and the personnel of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which is also in charge of the opening of this underwater museum to the public.
The impressive number of amphorae, the excellent condition of the shipwreck at a depth of 21-28 meters and the beauty of the exotic sea water and the rich seabed of the area, located inside the protected area of the National Sea Park of Alonissos-Northern Sporades, make the shipwreck of Peristera a must-see destination for every diver.
