The Lockheed Constellation, known as the "Connie," was a groundbreaking propeller-driven airliner developed by the Lockheed Corporation in the 1940s. It played a pivotal role in the development of the modern air travel industry, enabling airlines to offer long-range, high-altitude flights with increased comfort and safety.
During our visit to the @FlySnF Aerospace Expo, we had the opportunity to explore a Lockheed VC-121A nicknamed the “MacArthur Bataan.” Built in 1948, it is one of only two remaining airworthy aircraft of its type in the world. Its distinctive paint scheme honors General Douglas MacArthur, who named it "Bataan" after the Philippine peninsula associated with his famous promise following the 1942 Japanese victory.
The ‘Bataan’ has had a long career in military and NASA service and was nearly scrapped after years of being displayed outdoors. However, after being acquired by @lewisairlegends in 2015, a massive restoration project was undertaken, lasting eight years. This resulted in its first flight in Chino, CA, last year. The Bataan is now owned by Air Legends Foundation, whose mission is to restore and maintain historic aircraft for future generations.
We met with Steward Dawson, the pilot who flew this aircraft for the first time after its restoration, and he gave us a tour of this historic plane.
Established in 1928, Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology has trained over 100,000 pilots and technicians.
