I hit the road from Pörtschach, Austria, with the clear waters of Lake Wörthersee glistening in the rearview mirror and a feeling of excitement bubbling up. The drive south towards Slovenia was smooth, with the mountains slowly coming into view. First stop? Planica. Even though it's known for its insane ski jumps, it was summer, so I just marveled at the sheer size of the ski-flying hill and imagined what it’d be like to launch off it—crazy.
Next, I made my way to Bled Castle. The castle sits way up high, looking over Lake Bled like something out of a fairy tale. The view was unreal. There’s this tiny island in the middle of the lake with a cute little church on it, and it felt almost too perfect to be real. I could’ve stayed up there forever just soaking in the views.
But Bohinj Lake was calling, so I drove deeper into Slovenia’s national parks. Bohinj was quieter, and more peaceful than Bled, but equally stunning. The water was so clear you could see straight to the bottom. I just sat by the lake for a bit, taking it all in—completely zen.
On the way back, I drove through Loibl Pass, which was an adventure in itself. Twisting roads, steep cliffs, and thick forests kept the drive interesting the whole way. Crossing back into Austria felt bittersweet, but the sight of Pörtschach again brought me back full circle, happy, relaxed, and already thinking about my next trip.
