Indo-German cooperation is transforming agriculture by putting agroecology at the centre of climate-resilient farming and sustainable food systems. Through the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) between India and Germany, both countries are advancing climate-smart agriculture, sustainable rural development, and responsible natural resource management. By combining traditional Indian agricultural knowledge with German scientific innovation, this partnership promotes practical solutions for resilient food systems, improved farmer livelihoods, and long-term environmental sustainability.
A key pillar of this collaboration is the Lighthouse Initiative ‘Agroecology and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources’. Efforts focus on increasing farmer incomes, strengthening food and nutrition security, and building sustainable agriculture and horticulture value chains. The partnership also supports capacity development, knowledge exchange, access to green finance, and the scaling of agroecological approaches that boost productivity while reducing environmental impact and conserving biodiversity.
Agroecology directly contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). By improving soil health, reducing water use, and minimising waste across the food value chain, agroecology offers a holistic pathway toward sustainable agriculture and climate action.
