"Yesterday marked a milestone in preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Iran has now fulfilled key commitments under the nuclear deal. I want to take a moment to explain why this is so important. Over more than a decade, Iran had moved ahead with its nuclear programme and, before the deal, it had installed nearly 20,000 centrifuges that can enrich uranium for a nuclear bomb. Today Iran has removed two thirds of those machines. Before the deal, Iran was steadily increasing its stockpile of enriched uranium, enough for up to ten nuclear bombs. Today, more than 98 per cent of that stockpile has been shipped out of Iran, meaning Iran now does not have that material or even one bomb. Before, Iran was nearing completion of a new reactor capable of producing plutonium for a bomb. Today, the core that reactor has been pulled out and filled with concrete. So it cannot be used again. Before the deal, the world had relatively little visibility into Iran's nuclear programme. Today, international inspectors are on the ground and Iran has been subjected to the most comprehensive, intrusive inspection regime ever negotiated to monitor a nuclear programme."
STORYLINE:
United States President Barack Obama on Sunday heralded the full implementation of a historic nuclear accord with the Islamic Republic, saying that "today is a good day".
The president spoke at the close of an extraordinary weekend of diplomacy that saw the back-to-back release of the five Americans and the lifting of billions in international sanctions on Iran as part of the nuclear accord.
Yet underscoring the strain that continues to exist between the U.S. and Iran, the Obama administration also announced new penalties on Sunday on 11 individuals and entities involved in Tehran's ballistic missile programme.
