The most famous and heartbreaking ghost story of the St. Augustine Lighthouse originates from a real tragedy that occurred during its construction in July 1873. Hezekiah Pittee was the superintendent in charge of building the new tower, and his family lived on the grounds. His children, 15-year-old Eliza and 13-year-old Mary, were playing with a young African-American girl (whose name is lost to history) on a rail cart used to transport building materials from the bay to the construction site. While riding in the cart, a wooden block securing it failed, and the cart sped down the incline, crashing through the pier and overturning into the water. The three girls were trapped beneath the heavy cart and tragically drowned before they could be rescued.
Ever since this devastating event, the spirits of the young girls are believed to be the primary source of the lighthouse's paranormal activity. Visitors, staff, and paranormal investigators frequently report hearing the distinct sounds of children's laughter and the sound of small footsteps running up and down the tower's 219 stairs. The apparition of a young girl, often identified as Eliza, has been seen at the top of the staircase, sometimes wearing the blue dress she was buried in. Objects are said to be moved, and a disembodied voice has been heard asking for help. This tragic story has cemented the St. Augustine Lighthouse's reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the country, with the playful yet sorrowful spirits of the girls forever linked to the place where their lives were cut short.
