How do you move 2,700 lbs. of history?
Very,
very,
carefully.
This is the InfoZone Museum’s Linotype machine and its move from the fourth floor of Rawlings Library to its new home on the first floor.
A Linotype machine is a typesetting machine used in the printing industry in the late 19th through until the 1970s and 80s. The machine set type in lines of metal, producing a line-o-type, rather than as individual letters.
Now a part of the InfoZone museum, this Linotype machine was used by “The Pueblo Chieftain” and “Pueblo Star-Journal” until the late 20th century when digital typesetting replaced the large, cumbersome and loud machines.
Linotype at a glance:
The machine weighs in at a robust 2,700 lbs.
The keyboard has 90 keys: black keys on the left are for upper case letters, the middle blue keys are for numbers and the white keys on the right are for lower case letters.
An operator could quickly produce 11 lines of type a minute.
It was manufactured by the Mergenthaler Linotype Co. in New York.
