During the middle ages, siege warfare became the dominant form of military conflict as fortified castles and cities evolved into sophisticated defensive hubs. These strongholds utilised features like concentric walls, round towers, and gatehouses equipped with murder holes and portcullises to repel invaders. In response, attackers employed various aggressive strategies, including undermining foundations, constructing massive siege towers, and using heavy artillery such as trebuchets or early cannons. Beyond physical force, armies often relied on starvation tactics through long-term encirclement or psychological warfare and trickery to secure a surrender. The successful capture of these sites frequently resulted in brutal pillaging, as controlling such administrative and strategic centres was essential for total victory. This technical arms race between defensive architecture and offensive innovation defined European power struggles until the widespread use of gunpowder rendered static defences obsolete.
