On a sharp December day, the wind changes - and the birds begin to gather. In the twisting alleyways of Venice, a grieving couple catch a glimpse of their lost child. A woman returns home to find no trace of her existence. At the opening session of Tales of the Weird 2025, our panel revisited the dark, unsettling stories of Daphne du Maurier.

Speaker Bios:

Suzi Feay is a literary journalist with a particular interest in fiction and poetry. She writes for The Guardian and The Financial Times amongst others and is a published poet and writer. She also hosts a YouTube channel of author interviews, Suzi’s Book Bag.

Kim Newman is an award-winning writer, journalist, critic and broadcaster. One of the world’s foremost experts on fantasy and horror cinema, he is a contributing editor to the UK film magazine Empire and writes for publications including The Guardian and the BFI’s Sight and Sound. He is the author of numerous fiction and non-fiction books, and won the Bram Stoker Award for his best-selling novel Anno Dracula.

Bidisha is a broadcaster, presenter and journalist. She writes about the arts and culture and current affairs for the main UK broadsheets and appears extensively across the BBC, CNN, Channel 5 and Sky News. She is also an acclaimed film-maker and photographic artist. Her first horror short, An Impossible Poison (2017) was screened widely and selected for multiple international film festivals and was followed by her series Aurora (2020-2023). Her most recent publication is The Future of Serious Art.
 
Alice Lowe an actor, writer, director, and comedian who wrote, directed, and starred in the 2016 film Prevenge, having made her directorial debut with Solitudo, and co-wrote and starred in the 2012 film Sightseers. She has appeared as Dr. Haynes in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Madeleine Wool/Liz Asher in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Other acting roles include Little Britain, Skins and Sherlock.
