It was fun, until it was too much fun. I took off for a multi-day dinghy cruise to Palo Alto in dead wind, then the wind picked up. At the time of the rescue it was blowing 35-40 knot gusts with 4-6' wind waves. Despite poor radio skills I was able to call for help and get it! Thanks so much to Mark and Adam from Coyote Point Harbor Patrol for their help getting me out of the chop and into the breakwater, where I chilled for 2 nights in my boom tent, and thoroughly enjoyed my dad's birthday.
This vid is a continuation of my Bike Sailing project that I've been doing for the past 7-8 years. I like getting into nature without relying on cars, trucks, and airplanes. As you can see in the vids, I use an electric folding bike to tow my boat to and from the water. The boat is a 350 pound scaled up First Mate designed by Ross Lillistone. The mods to allow bike towing are my own inventions. The use of translucent G10 as the hull material is my own choice, and indeed Ross Lillistone discouraged this choice initially. The plans called for 1/4" marine plywood. This boat has some excellent safety features including fore and aft buoyancy compartments, a reefable balanced lug sail, and side decks, and is meant to withstand severe conditions. While I never capsized on this outing, I would say I have a lot to learn about how to handle heavy weather.
I appreciate all the tips I've received on my various vids. I acknowledge that I get in over my head sometimes, but the alternative (staying home) doesn't feel like an option to me. I have been steadily upping my skills to be able to handle the conditions of San Francisco Bay, and regularly getting surprised as well.
