Selim Palmgren:
Prelude Op 17, No 18
Clark Bryan, piano
Another stunning work by the Finnish composer Palmgren. Such passion and subtle romantic harmonies!
Selim Palmgren (1878–1951) was one of Finland’s most influential composer-pianists—often called “the Chopin of the North” for his lyrical writing and deep affinity for the keyboard. Born in Pori, Palmgren trained at the Helsinki Conservatory before continuing his piano studies in Berlin with renowned teachers such as Ansorge, Berger, and Ferruccio Busoni.
Over the course of his career, Palmgren conducted choral and orchestral ensembles in Finland, toured widely as a concert pianist throughout the Nordic countries, and made several acclaimed guest-conducting appearances. His artistry eventually brought him to the United States, where he joined the faculty of the Eastman School of Music in 1921 as a professor of composition.
Palmgren returned to Finland later in life and remained a respected musical figure until his death in Helsinki at age 73. He was married to the celebrated opera singer Maikki Järnefelt, a partnership that shaped both his artistic life and his creative output.
