Iowa Pacific "Prairie View" Dome Car on Amtrak's Carl Sandburg - Galesburg, IL 6/25/16

Описание: Over the weekend of June 25-26th was the annual Railroad Days event in Galesburg, Illinois. With many activities going on throughout the city, most of the train-related events could be found at the Galesburg Amtrak station, and the neighboring Galesburg Railroad Museum. Plus, BNSF also had a diesel locomotive on display for people to tour.

While at the station looking at all the Railroad Days happenings, it's also a great excuse to get some train watching in as well. I arrived at the station on Saturday (June 25th) a few minutes before the scheduled stop of Amtrak train #381, the westbound "Carl Sandburg" service which runs from Chicago to Quincy. I crossed the tracks at a nearby road crossing and set up my camera facing the station as Amtrak approached. Many other railfans were also trackside to watch the train pull in. Pulled by Amtrak P42 #64, the usual Carl Sandburg consist follows, featuring a mix of Amfleet and Horizon passenger cars. On the end, however, was a surprise - Iowa Pacific's "Prairie View" full-length dome car. This car was on the train as a special charter running round-trip from Chicago to Quincy and back. Prairie View was built in 1955 by the Budd Company, for use on Great Northern's famous Empire Builder passenger train. The car was later used for a time on Amtrak before eventually being sold in the 1990's. Today it's owned by Iowa Pacific Holdings, carrying the reporting mark SLRG (for IP's San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad), and its original Great Northern number, 1394. An interesting note: Amtrak's only dome car "Ocean View" is a sister to the Prairie View, also built in 1955 and originally carrying number 1391.
