Tranquilo Bay

My base on the island of Bastimentos was a stunning eco lodge called Tranquilo Bay ‪@TranquiloBayPanama‬ (https://tranquilobay.com/). Here the owners have built a scaffold tower that reaches above the tree canopy so their guests can get a birds eye view of the rainforest and its remarkable birdlife.

Sloths

But possibly the most captivating of fauna to see at these dizzying heights are brown throated three-toed sloths. I spot a baby cling to its mother as she swings nonchalantly through the tree canopy.

Rainforest

Meanwhile from the paths that interlace the rainforest floor white faced capuchin look down from their branches, bright red poison dart tree frogs and rufous tailed hummingbirds sit snugly in tiny cup-shaped nests.

Bird island

The staff at Tranquilo Bay are proud to show off the abundant birdlife that abounds here and on a trip to Bird Island, where ground nesting birds like magnificent frigate birds and brown boobies nest in rookeries far from predators, we spot a migratory roost where turkey vultures are paused, en route to their American breeding grounds. Red-billed tropicbirds soar as we approach the island, their long white tail feathers drifting below them like kite ribbons.

Turquoise waters

In the blue waters of the bay, common bottlenose dolphins leap and in the mangrove swamps that line a deep canal leading out to sea are cuckoos, fiddler crabs and common black hawks that hunt here for mangrove crabs. Meanwhile emerald basilisk sunbathe whilst spectacled caiman slip into the waters. This is a true tropical paradise.
