ミアレシティが、まだ完成していなかった頃。

街は再開発の途中で、
夜になると工事灯が星のように瞬いていた。

俺とあいつは、同じ時期にこの街へ来た。
最初のポケモンを受け取った日も、
メガシンカの噂を追い始めた夜も、
不思議なほど足並みが揃っていた。
強くなる速度も、勝ち方も、ほとんど同じ。
どちらが先か、どちらが上かなんて、
当時は誰も気にしていなかった。

——少なくとも、俺はそう思っていた。

街で事件が起きるたび、俺たちは並んで現場に立った。
暴走するポケモン、崩れかけた区画、逃げ惑う人々。
俺は冷静だった。

被害を広げないために何を切り捨てるべきか、
常に最短の答えを選んだ。

あいつは違った。
迷い、立ち止まり、それでも誰かの名前を呼んだ。
危険だとわかっていても、一歩前に出る。

いつからか、人々は言い始めた。
「君、頼りになるよ」

その言葉は、だいたいいつもあいつに向けられていた。
理由は、たぶん単純だ。
あいつの背中には、希望を重ねやすかった。

決定的だったのは、
ミアレ地下で起きた、あの夜だ。

制御を失ったメガシンカポケモン。
閉じ込められた人々。
時間は、残されていなかった。
俺は判断した。
全員を救う方法はない。

一匹を止めるためには、
一匹を犠牲にするしかない。

被害は最小限に抑えられる。
それが、俺の選んだ答えだった。

だが、あいつは違う選択をした。
無謀で、計算の合わない行動。
誰も切り捨てないと決め、
奇跡に近い可能性へ踏み込んだ。

結果だけを見れば——
街は救われた。

歓声が上がり、
人々は彼の名を呼び、
歴史は静かに形を変えた。

「未来を切り開いた若きトレーナー」

俺の判断は、語られなかった。
間違ってはいなかったはずなのに、
記録に残る場所はなかった。

その夜、俺は理解した。
この世界は、


一番強い者を選ぶわけじゃない。
一番正しい者を残すわけでもない。


人々が未来を重ね、
名前を呼び、
希望を託した存在が、
自然と前に立つ。

俺は、そこに選ばれなかった。


翌朝、俺はミアレを離れた。

英雄の隣に立つことも、
ライバルとして名を刻むことも、
どちらも選ばなかった。

主人公じゃなくていい。
語られなくていい。

それでも——
あの夜、街を救った事実は消えない。

ポケモンと共に下した判断も、
確かに俺の中に残っている。

再開発が進むミアレシティの夜景を背に、
俺は名もなきトレーナーとして歩き出した。

これは、
人々の記憶には残らなかったが、
確かに生きていた者の物語だ。
