Researchers at McMaster University have discovered an all-new class of antibiotics. The discovery responds to a critical need for new antimicrobial medicines, as bacteria and other microorganisms evolve new ways to withstand existing drugs. This phenomenon is called antimicrobial resistance — or AMR — and researchers say it’s a global crisis. Here, McMaster scientists Gerry Wright and Manoj Jangra describe their important discovery: lariocidin, a new molecule that attacks bacteria in a way that's completely different from other antibiotics.
